10 Best Tech Innovations at Sea
The digital age is changing the way people navigate the seas. Cruise lines, such as Disney, Royal Caribbean and Carnival, are making the most of technology to enhance the guest experience and make life a little sweeter while you take an onboard vacation.
From security to amenities, cruise lines are using gadgets to make the trip posh and fun. Take a look at the top 10 innovations to hit cruise ships in the past few years.
1. Computer ClassesIf you are not the type to lounge around on-deck, Celebrity Cruises is offering classes to teach you how to use the technology available in their onboard Apple Store, including the latest iPhone, iMac, iPad, and iPod. While you are there, you can purchase some of Apple's newest devices that you learned how to use. You can also pick up a new digital camera, and an Apple-certified technician will teach you how to use it.
2. Digital WorkshopIf you want to further your education, HAL Nieuw Amsterdam cruise ship offers an onboard digital workshop to help you get the most out of your vacation pictures. Each guest can work one-on-one with a trained digital specialist. The line provides the newest software and computer equipment to let you improve the pictures you take on your trip.
3. iPod DocksAlthough not necessarily technologically impressive, the Allure of the Sea offers a practical addition for those enjoying life on deck. The iPod docks stand within easy reach of the lounge chairs, so you can enjoy your favorite playlist as you lie in the sun.
4. 4D cinemas with Vibrating SeatsThe Costa Deliziosa cruise line want you to experience shows not only visually, but with all your senses. The onboard theater is equipped to go beyond just 3D. The seats produce smells and sensations that make going to the movies a virtual experience.
5. Way FinderSeveral ships, including the Allure of the Sea and Oasis of the Seas, have added online navigational panels to help guests find their way around the decks. These stations provide touch screen maps that help you navigate around the boat. You can view the daily performance program and see all the amenities available as well. The Way Finder provides directions and tools to help guide guests as they plan their day on the ocean.
6. Interactive Play FloorLeave it to Disney to turn a play floor into a technological fantasy for kids. The Disney Dream offers a floor that serves as a hands-on gaming device. With the Interactive Play Floor, children can experience the stories of classic books. For example, the kids will fly over London as they listen to the story of Peter Pan.
7. Digital Sports SimulatorAnother offering from the mind of the Disney creators is virtual sports. Disney Cruises have soccer, golf, tennis and basketball inside a digitally enhanced world. The simulators are set up similar to the Wii Sports games, so kids don’t play with any equipment besides the gaming controllers. The sports simulators give them a chance to run and play safely within the confines of a cruise ship.
8. Flat Screen Port HoleThe round windows in your cabin keep you amused throughout the cruise. On a Disney ship, you might watch cartoon fish or see a random Disney character give you a wave. Other lines offer similar devices that mimic the ocean and life underwater.
9. Smart WristbandThe Smart Wristband allows cruise teams to keep track of everyone onboard. The crew can use them to know when you’re out and arrange the cleaning of your cabin, for instance. They are also function as security devices, as a way to account for every guest on board in case of an emergency. The Royal Caribbean line require all children to wear these devices and parents can use them to monitor their kids while they enjoy all the ship has to offer.
10. Facial RecognitionThis new technology allows guests to pick up photos at a self-service kiosk without having to wade through every photograph taken onboard. Carnival Cruise line is testing the software as part of their new digital photo platform. A picture is taken of each guest at check-in and the system uses that image and facial recognition software to compile pictures of you taken by the professional photography staff.
