5 Unpleasant Things About Airports

by Paul
(Romania)

Airports surely are not our favorite places on Earth. No matter how many facilities they offer, regardless of them being clean, safe or large, no matter how friendly the staff is or how fast the security check goes, people generally don't like airports. If you are one of them, here are some tips on how to make your hours in the airport easier to bear by looking at the most common complaints passengers have:

1. The security check

Everyone hates the security check. Sometimes, the airport officials are so eager to make sure that you are safe that they forget about a little thing called dignity and ask humiliating stuff from passengers, like taking almost all their clothes off. What a nightmare!

Even the ordinary check is annoying enough, so try thinking of it in advance and make things as easy as you can: Pack all liquids in the check-in luggage, try choosing clothes with no metallic parts and relax yourself with the thought that they are all for your own good.

2. It is hard to get some sleep

If you are forced to spend the night in the airport, or if you have a bad connection, you might need to sleep in the airport. It happens to most of us at least once in a life time, so no need to make a big deal out of it. Depending on the airport, this experience might prove easier or harder than you might think.

Some airports provide blankets and folding mattresses for passengers who are forced to remain in the airport overnight. However, don't count on it. If you are traveling during the winter season or storms are expected, be prepared and get your own sleeping bag or at least a blanket and a small pillow.

Instead of the pillow, you may even use your winter jacket, for example. Find a quiet corner and claim it for the night. Make sure you keep a hand or another part of your body on the bag so that it can't be stolen and try to relax. Some music device and some ear plugs should complete your gear.

Oh! Don't forget to set the alarm of your phone so that you won?t oversleep and lose your connection! According to "professional airport sleepers", you can always stick a note on yourself asking to be awakened at a certain hour. People passing by will surely do this favor to you if you don't forget to write please in your note?

3. It is confusing

If you must transit a huge airport and have little time to waste, than it could be extremely hard to find a particular gate in a very short while. You might even panic thinking that you will lose the connection and yes, I know, airport staff is not always as helpful as it should, or they not even speak English and you have no idea how to communicate with them.

If you find yourself in this situation, the best thing to do is stop running and insist with the airport workers. Show them your ticket if they do not understand what you are saying and kindly ask them to take you there. Your desperate figure should be enough to convince them that you are in a difficult situation!

4. The prices are prohibitive

If you are on a tight budget, don't forget to take snacks and water with you. Even if you are a soda addict, when you are trapped for hours in the airport, you will long for some water, so make sure you have it with you.

Take something delicious to eat with you, this will help you forget about those darned huge prices and will lift up your moral about having to sit in the airport for hours. However, you may want to lose your time in the airport shops anyway: it's a fun way to lose your waiting time and you might find some cool item you afford to buy, who knows?

5. It is really busy

One of the most annoying things about the airports is the fact that they are very busy. The good places to sit are always taken and the noise is unbearable. However, there is something good in a busy airport too: the diversity.

Watching people from all over the world passing by might be very interesting, especially if you have nothing better to do. Sometimes, people dressed in their traditional gowns or performing unusual rituals, undisturbed by the audience might be very picturesque to watch.

Even though airports are not our favorite places in the world, they can become real adventures. In order not to let it become a misadventure however, you should go prepared and think about everything before leaving from home. Have a safe trip!
