5 Ways to Be Entertained in Sydney

Sydney is nothing if not entertaining, and the list of options the average visitor has for fun is nearly endless! Theatre

In spite of the fact that Melbourne would have everyone believe it’s the only city in the country to see quality theatre, Sydney has a wealth of culture and a long history of excellence when it comes to Theatre. The world-renowned Sydney Theatre Company have a permanent home on the Walsh Bay Pier, and continually amaze audiences with famous and unknown works alike. Having featured casts including Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Geoffery Rush in the past, the theatre world of Sydney is nothing to be sniffed at, whatever Melbourne has to say about it!

Music

The people of Sydney love their music and, especially over summer, the city hosts an array of outdoor music festivals for every taste. There’s the Big Day Out, a one-day music festival that usually takes place on Australia Day, Homebake, a Sydney institution featuring all home-grown Aussie acts, as well as a range of electronic and dance music festivals, the numbers of which grow each year. Sydney’s Acer Arena and the Sydney Entertainment Centre often host some of the biggest acts in the world including Eminem, Bob Dylan, Robin Williams, Beyonce and many, many more.

Festivals

As well as music festivals, Sydney hosts a large number of other types of festivals as well. Writer’s festivals, food festivals, summer festivals, medieval festivals, vintage festivals, Latin festivals---you name a niche, and Sydney has a festival to celebrate it! A definite Sydney highlight is the Vivid Festival, which not only showcases light installations all over the city, but celebrates the work of creative types from all over the world.

Nightlife

Sydney’s nightlife is legendary throughout Australia and no matter what type of music or scene you’re into, you’ll find somewhere to enjoy after dark in Sydney. For people who like a bit of a boogie, Chinese Laundry is a great dance club in the city featuring heavy drum and bass and electronic music. Retro, just down the road, is a club that goes heavy on the cheese, with seventies and eighties flashback music high on the agenda. If you want somewhere with a bit more class, The Ivy is a massive complex right in the middle of George St in the city and features a rooftop pool bar if you’re feeling really exclusive.

Events

Apart from the regular nightlife, there are certain events that draw even more people to Sydney. The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is an excellent way to spend the night out, and the festivities associated with the Mardi Gras culminate in a colourful and vibrant parade all the way through the city. If you like a little glitter with your night out, Mardi Gras is for you!
