7 Simple Tricks for Packing Light When Flying
How many times have you overpacked for a trip? In addition, with all the fees for extra luggage, packing light has become even more important then in the past. If you can manage to take a trip with only a carry-on, you can skip some of the extra time at the airport.

Before you even begin to pack, don't try and carry on luggage larger than the size of a standard carry-on. If you attempt this, most likely you will end up having to check your bag anyhow.
1. Make a list. Write a packing list. There has been many times I forgot the most basic item because I was in a hurry. Often the list can be the same every time you travel - a reminder to not forget something to sleep in, your toothbrush, and all your electronic chargers. This will help you avoid packing more stuff than you need.
2. Combine outfits. This is especially important for women who have to color coordinate outfits with shoes. Pick a shade and a matching pair of shoes. Bring items that can be worn with several different mix and match varieties.
3. Roll up your clothes. This trick can really help you fit the most amount of clothes in your suitcase. Fold your shirts and pants in half and then start rolling to reduce some of the bulk.
4. Pack travel size items. Pack as many travel-size items as possible. Remember if you are staying in a decent hotel, they will have free toiletry items like shampoos, razor kits, and more.
5. Wear your bulkier items on the plane. This may be an inconvenience if you are traveling to a hot climate from a cold place. However, a pair of boots take up much more room in your suitcase than flip-flops or sandals. You can always take off your sweater once you are on the plane.
6. Minimize bulk. Try to pack microfibers or items made of material that you can squeeze in your luggage with minimal wrinkles and extra bulk. Consider a vacuum bag that allows you to significantly reduce bulk.
7. Pack what you need only. While it may be tempting to bring your favorite pillow, six books, extra jewelry, and your bulky hair dryer, most likely you can live without these extra items.
When you fly, remember to remove all restricted items like lighters, knives, liquids more than 3 oz, and other items that will hold you back in the security line.
Packing smarter and lighter not only reduces headaches at he airport, but prevents the shoulder and backaches that come along with carrying heavy luggage.
