Why Brits Aren't Prepared to Ditch Their Holidays

Why Brits Aren't Prepared to Ditch Their Holidays

In uncertain times, one thing remains constant, Brits love their holidays. The economic climate in Britain and the rest of Europe is edgy to say the least and with popular holiday destinations like Greece and Portugal defaulting on their debts, trips abroad aren't getting any cheaper but this is doing little to deter people that see a holiday as a key event in their year.

In fact, in the midst of an economic crisis, holidays arguably become even more important for people as we look for escapism and solace from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Of course the type of holidays we take might be changing, more people are taking advantage of cheap last minute deals and even holidaying in England to save money, though this is not to say or holidays are getting any shorter.

There could be a number reasons for this, lets explore why Brits aren't prepared to give up their holidays under any circumstances?

A British Institution
The summer holiday is as British as roast beef and Yorkshire puddings, since the 1940s, families, groups of youngsters and older couples have been taking seaside holidays, originally in British holiday resorts like Blackpool and Bognor, and since the advent of commercial air travel, foreign favourites like Spain, Greece and Turkey.

Whether it's relaxing on the beach all day catching some rays, experiencing thrills and spills in waterparks, sightseeing, frolicking by the pool or simply spending all day (and night) in the bar, the traditional British holiday hasn't changed much over the years, and it's unlikely to in the future!

Sun Worshipers
Even though the UK's climate is distinctly inclement, us Brits love a bit of sunshine, more than evident when, at the slightest hint of the mercury rising, motorways become clogged as people make a b-line for the coast, desperately scrambling to make the most of what will inevitably one of the few, fleeting summer days.

This is exactly why the aforementioned destinations are favoured by Brits; Southern Europe and the Mediterranean are virtually guaranteed high temperatures throughout the summer making them a safe bet for a week of tanning.

A Warm Welcome
Despite our perceived reputation amongst Europeans as loutish yobs that drink too much, most foreigners welcome Brits with open arms. One thing that certainly makes Brits feel at home when on holiday abroad, is the fact that most Europeans at least speak conversational English.

An aptitude in English just makes everything that bit easier, communicating with hotel staff, ordering food, and arguing with the German couple over the sunbed when the other party at least gets the gist of what you're talking about very much oils the gears of social interaction.

This all goes someway to explaining why Brits, perhaps more than other nationalities, cherish their holidays and in times of financial hardship, refuse to give them up.
