Contemporary and Historic Art Galleries in Denver, Colorado
by Mary White
Denver art galleries represent a sweeping variety of artwork and artists that range from contemporary to historic and traditional. The Denver metro area has many art galleries that are in easily accessible areas, and even a few off the beaten path. There are several different art districts in Denver, each with a sampling of galleries that are well worth the trip. One would need to several weeks to adequately explore all of the galleries that Denver has to offer. Collectors and art aficionados with a smaller window of time for gallery hopping can sample a few across the spectrum and come away with a well-rounded visit.
The Art District on Santa Fe Many consider the Santa Fe District to be the center of Denver’s art scene. There are more than 40 galleries where lovers of fine art can find just about anything. The first Friday of each month finds lively crowds enjoying the First Friday Art Walk while a less rowdy crowd is out every third Friday for Collector's Night. One of the more notable galleries in this district is the Spark Gallery. This particular gallery is located in the center of the district, which is easily accessible from I-25. In addition to contemporary exhibits by Colorado artists, this gallery also sponsors lectures and classes. Just outside of the Santa Fe District is Pirate: Contemporary Art. This gallery clings to its punk roots and features alternative art that is eclectic and a bit cheeky.
The Historical LoDo District The Lower Downtown Historic District, or LoDo as the locals affectionately call it, is considered to be a hip, fun and exciting hub of the city. In addition to trendy galleries there is an abundance of history dating from the gold rush to the rebirth of Denver. The historic walking tour has received rave reviews from tourists and locals alike. The Robischon Gallery has a respected history of hosting exhibitions, that showcase not only regional, but national and international artists, since 1976. In addition to shows of solo artists, the Robischon also hosts group shows that are thematically coordinated. In addition to local artists, Translations Gallery promotes national and international artists. This contemporary fine art gallery is also known to assist with corporate imaging and branding by leasing artwork to corporations. Gallery patrons enjoy the un-intimidating and knowledgeable curators.
The Golden Triangle Museum District The district is located south of Downtown Denver and contains eight museums. In addition to the many museums, The Golden Triangle is also home to many fine art galleries as well as the Denver Ballet, Denver Orchestra and many live theaters. The Walker Fine Art Gallery is located four blocks away from the Denver Art Museum and is known for featuring contemporary artists at both the local and national level. The gallery’s exhibitions are themed and include both 2D and 3D artists. Walker Fine Arts is known for showing art that is on the cutting edge in the areas of Realism, Experimental Photography and Abstract art. Up in the mountains, Vail, Colorado is also home to several cool boutique galleries. They are great to explore as well, if you have
