Does a road trip to Mexico require a US passport?

US Passport Question for Mexico Road Trip
Me and my friends are planning to take a road trip down to Mexico this summer. I've heard that if you fly into and out of Mexico from the US then you need a passport. But if you are driving in and out then you only need a driver's license and a birth certificate.
I don't want to get in trouble for not having a passport but I don't want to spend the money for one if it's not needed. Can you help me understand this?
ANSWER:Hello Gabrielle,
As of 2008 the US Department of State recommends that you obtain a US passport for traveling by land, sea and air. You will hear from time to time that others go on cruises, ferries and driving trips in and out of the United States without being asked to present their passport.
But that doesn't mean you should travel outside of the country without a passport. You should have one on you just in case you are asked. It's also good to have one as it will help you both with the US Embassy and local authorities if you trouble finds you while in Mexico. Hope that helps, have fun on your road trip!
