Expired Passport - Are US citizens able to travel to Puerto Rico?
Expired Passport - Puerto Rico Question
Would I be able to get in and out of Puerto Rico without a passport? My family wants to go for vacation there but I have an expired passport. I guess I could get a new one but just checking first to see if I even need one.
ANSWER:Hello,
Officially, you do not need a passport to travel to and from Puerto Rico if you are a US citizen. But the US government as well as the Puerto Rican authorities encourage travelers to take a passport.
The reason being is if you need to prove who you are in an emergency then a passport would come in handy. If travel authorities are strongly recommending a passport then I'm sure they have a good reason. If I were you I would get a passport renewal so you can travel with peace of mind knowing that you are covered.
More and more travelers are starting to realize that having a passport on you outside of the 50 US states is the right way to go. Even when it is not technically required.
