For many people Liverpool is associated with two things only, the Beatles and the Liverpool F.C. However, this lively Merseyside city, which celebrated its 800th birthday only 4 years ago holds many more secrets that you might be surprised to discover.

Being the birthplace of all four Beatles, it is not a surprise that the city holds a Guiness Book of Records title for the city with the most no. 1 hits in the World. Over 50 top hits were penned and produced by the artists from the city.

Liverpool is also a city with the most parks in Britain after London and it is also the only city after London to have 2 cathedrals. The Anglican Liverpool Cathedral is the largest in the UK and 5th largest in the world.

The first ever recorded cargo from America landed in Liverpool. A link between sugar and diabetes was also discovered in Liverpool and the city can be proud of having the very first purpose built prison in the world.

Liverpool has already been named the city of inventions and innovation, with many great things being envisaged by wise men from the city. Ferries, railways, steamships, trams and electric trains were pioneered in the city as means of a mass transport. Liverpool is also proud of having the first lending library, school for the blind, high school for girls, council house, citizen’s advice bureau. Its School of Tropical Medicine, the first such school in the world, was the first one to discover that malaria can be transmitted by Mosquito. It was also in Liverpool that a shipowner, Sir Alfred Lewis Jones introduced banana to the UK back in 1884.

There is even something for the little ones. Two of the most popular 20th centrury toy lines, Meccano and Hornby Model Railways were created in Liverpool by a local inventor, Frank Hornby. The invention of interchangeable parts led him to becoming a millionaire, a politician and a father to a toy producing company that is still active today.

Some might say that there is something magical in the air of Liverpool, causing so many inventions and creativity amongst the population of the city. It’s really hard to tell but the best way to find out is to travel to this lovely city and experience its beauty and climate.
