Passport Application Rejected Because of Child Support
They say I am behind on payments, that is complete bull! I was behind briefly a couple of years ago but everything has been fine for a long time now. What do I need to do for the passport agency so they don't reject my application again? I didn't even know the passport agency has my child support records! That's like big brother type of stuff. I really don't understand why the passport agency is getting involved in my personal matters. It's not like I'm a hardcore criminal or something because I was behind on payments for a few months a long time ago!
Should I go there in person to explain to them or do I need to send them some type of documentation?
ANSWER:Hello,
I understand what you're saying and this is actually a pretty common problem every day around the country. I believe the Passport Agency does not actually have your child support files but they do a background check while processing your application. During that check is when child support payment issues pop up. They will not issue a passport to someone who has a red flag on their child support background check.
What you can do is contact the department that keeps track of your child support payments and let them know your situation. Tell them you have been current on your payments but you were denied a passport. They will then be able to issue an updated list to the Passport Agency showing that you are eligible.
