Hotel-Hopping in the Lake District
Hotel-Hopping in the Lake District
I once spent three weeks in the Lake District and bounced from hotel to hotel during my stay. I had a great time and enjoyed the services at most of these hotels. I’m not going to name and shame the not-so-good establishments as it was a long time ago and they may well have upped their game. What I can do is tell you about the great areas I visited and the wonderful places in which I stayed.

Now you may not be as restless as I am and you may like to stay in one place for your whole trip. That’s absolutely fine and to be expected but can I suggest that if you do, you rent a car and do as many day trips as you can? The Lakes has such a massive amount to offer that staying put is simply unforgiveable in my book.
Windermere Hotels
Let’s start with Lake Windermere. This is one of the most popular destinations in the Lake District and it’s easy to see why. It’s the largest natural lake in England at 10.5 miles long and along its length, there is plenty to be discovered. So it’s definitely worth staying for at least a few days to really explore the area.
There are tonnes of hotels to choose from near Lake Windermere so it really depends on your individual budget. If you are looking at higher end hotels, you might like to choose the Applegarth Villa, a 5 star luxury accommodation. As part of your stay, you’ll be invited to use the hotel’s spa facilities when you’re not relaxing in your beautifully designed room.
If you’re a little closer to where I was on the spending scale, you can head for the Royal Oak which is a family-run inn with a lovely atmosphere. You’ll feel most welcome here.
Lake Buttermere Hotels
Buttermere is another popular lake in the district and probably my favourite. The walks in this area are fantastic and offer some breath taking views. It’s pretty tiny compared to Windermere at only 1.5 miles long, but the views from the summits of Haystacks and Red Pike are really quite marvellous.
At the higher end of the scale, you’ll be very comfortable in the Bridge Hotel between Buttermere and Crummock Water. You can hire a room here or if you’re feeling really flush, they offer apartments if you would like self-catering accommodation.
Winder Hall is a little bit cheaper. The attractive stone manor house is elegant and spacious with antique fittings and ornaments throughout.
Research and Shop Around
With the Lakes being as popular as they are, you will be spoilt for choice. Your budget will dictate the areas and types of hotels you’ll aim for but there are loads of options for any wallet. Staying in a hotel in the Lake District offers the obvious benefits of comfortable accommodation (that someone else cleans!) and regular meals, all in total warmth and comfort. All your laundry is dealt with and there’s no washing up, making a hotel stay an ideal getaway from the daily grind of home life.
If you shop around carefully, you will find some great deals and you don’t have to book as far in advance as you might have to with a holiday cottage.
