Need to know the India visa requirements for Americans? This guide details the steps to take in order to complete the application process correctly.
India Tourist Visa Requirements
To start off, your passport should have two or more blank pages. If you do not have any left, you can apply for additional pages to be added before trying to get an India visa. The passport should still be valid for six months longer than your travels.
The India Embassy requires proof of residence. The address you list on your application should match proof of ID. You can submit a copy of your Driver's License. If the addresses do not match, you can instead submit a utility bill with the matching address that is on your application.
In order to be granted approval, you will need to submit your application and supporting documents to the correct consulate in your jurisdiction.
If you are a resident of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma or Texas, turn in your documents at the Houston Consulate. 4100 Westheimer Road
If you are a resident of Bahamas, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington DC or West Virginia, turn in your documents at the Washington DC Consulate. 1010 Wisconsin Avenue
If you are a resident of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington or Wyoming, turn in your documents at the San Francisco Consulate. 965 Mission Street
If you are a resident of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont or Virgin Islands, turn in your documents to the New York City Consulate. 316 East 53rd Street
If you are a resident of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota or Wisconsin, turn in your documents to the Chicago Consulate. 17 North State Street
India Visa Photo Requirements
Your photograph should be taken at a FedEx Office, Walgreens, Post Office or equivalent retail store. They have the right equipment and standards to make professional quality, passport-style photographs.
Taking the picture yourself at home is not recommended as it most likely will be rejected. Also keep in mind to take off your glasses while the picture is being taken. Instead of using staples, use glue to place the photograph in the appropriate spot on the application.
