Turkey is a fantastic country to head to for your holidays this year. The climate is fantastic and the country is steeped in such culture and history that you’ll never run out of new things to discover. The food is excellent, the people are fascinating and it’s jam-packed with great cities to explore. So whether it’s a complete country tour you’re looking for, or if you’re just looking to decide which city to head for, read on to find out more!
Istanbul
Being Turkey’s most populous city, Istanbul is a throbbing community offering plenty for the discerning traveller. Taking up both sides of the Bosphorus, the city bridges Asia and Europe and is home to an estimated 19 million people.
Be sure to take in a Hamam (a Turkish bath) while you’re in Istanbul. There’s at least one in every neighbourhood so you’ll have plenty to choose from! A walking tour is a must too as you’ll learn so much about this fascinating city on foot. Head to a hotspot for Nargile (Turkish water pipe) while you’re there, it’s certainly an experience! And one the locals love too.
Antalya
Located on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, Antalya is the largest city in the area and considered to be at the heart of the ‘Turkish Riviera’. Head to the city in April when the climate is at its best – not too cold but also not sweltering as it can get in the height of summer! Explore the old quarter of Kaleiçi. This area is probably the finest for architectural and historical sites of note and you can easily while away a whole day exploring the narrow, winding streets. Food is extremely cheap in Antalya so be sure to indulge in delightful, local cuisine while you’re there. You can enjoy a full meal for around $5 so tuck in – and enjoy the friendly service!
The nightlife in Antalya is fantastic, with plenty of bars offering nargile, live music, games and a general air of conviviality.
Erzurum
Situated at an altitude of 2000 metres above sea level, Erzurum is the highest major city in Turkey. A slightly less obvious destination for tourists, you’ll enjoy the cultural delights of the city without being swarmed by fellow travellers. Erzurum is great for skiing with Palandöken ski resort only 10 minutes away by bus. While in the city, make sure you sample some of the local cheese. Erzurum is famous for it and it’s hard to find examples of this hard cheese anywhere else in Turkey.
Izmir
The third largest city in Turkey, Izmir is a rapidly growing city and is becoming more and more popular amongst visitors to Turkey. The waterfront promenade is beautiful for walks, topped off with a horse-drawn carriage ride along the cobbled street that runs alongside. Make sure you take in Kemeralti while you’re there. This huge bazaar features all the souvenirs, clothing and trinkets you could wish for, and is studded with lounge areas where you can relax with the locals.
