Fiji cruises are a fun way to discover this amazing South Pacific archipelago. But it’s not all about beaches and watersports: Fiji has an amazing array of cultural activities that can teach you a lot about this culturally fascinating part of the world. An amazing mix of Pacific Islander, Western and Asian cultures await you in Fiji.
5. Tappoo Shopping Mall
It might seem strange to feature a shopping mall in this category, but the Tappoo shopping mall in Nadi features some of the most interesting craft and artifact stores in Fiji. It even features the largest variety of black pearl jewelry, a local specialty. For great souvenirs or simply to window shop, this is a great spot to see the local craft talent.
4. Fiji Parliament
If you want to learn more about the history of Fiji and its struggle for independence from colonial powers, you must stop by the Fiji parliament. It was built on the model of the traditional Fiji hut and houses the Fiji government. It’s not super exciting (there are no guided tours), but it is something of an interesting architectural spot and it is open to the public. You can take pictures and read some plaques that describe the different parts of Fiji history. Great for political buffs!
3. Navua River Village
On the Navua River, there’s a little traditional village that hosts regular cultural tours and activities. Spend the day in the village and learn how the first Fijians lived. Take part in a traditional kava ceremony or paddle along the scenic Navua River. You can even swim in clear mountain lakes. You will be served a typical Fijian lunch with all the traditional fixings. You can shop to your heart’s content and get some great souvenirs. Plan a good day to see everything!
2. Suva Municipal Market
Again, not especially “cultural” in nature, but the Suva municipal market is actually a fascinating place to visit while in Fiji. It’s probably the biggest and liveliest market in Fiji, and it will suck you in with its variety of flavours and colours. You can buy fresh produce including tropical fruit, the catch of the day that you can fry in your hotel room or bring to a kava dinner, and an array of colourful handicrafts to bring back as souvenirs. Haggle with the Indian-run shops, but not with the Fijians.
1. Fiji Museum
If you want to learn everything about Fiji culture and history, then you need to stop by the Fiji Museum. Set in the beautiful Suva botanical gardens, the museum has an amazing collection of archaeological artefacts from digs as well as exhibits presenting crafts, pottery and other cultural objects from the many cultures represented on the islands. The museum is the oldest in the South Pacific (it opened in 1904) and it’s really cheap (less than $10).
So while you’re planning the next leg of your trip, maybe choosing among Malaysia hotels, make sure you stop by some of these cultural attractions in Fiji!
