Top Tips on How to Travel Safely

How to Travel Safely

How to Travel Safely

If you are traveling to an unfamiliar place, then you should get ready for the plethora of potential problems that you might encounter along the way. After all, the main reason why tourists usually fall prey to these problems to begin with is because they don't prepare themselves properly before they go on a trip.

The first thing you need to get ready for is your luggage check at the airport. When checking your luggage, stay with it until it is properly checked. If you need to let go of your bags at any point, keep your feet on their handles. It would also be highly advisable not to put your house address on your bag tags. Instead, list your company's address or a friend's address - and make sure your bag tags are covered ones.

If you have any important papers with you, don't check them with your bags. In fact, as a rule of thumb, you shouldn't check anything you wouldn't want to lose. Now, that doesn't mean you should wear all of your gold chains, and expensive rings and watches for everyone to see. Instead, just leave your expensive accessories at home.

The next thing you need to get ready for is the hotel you are going to stay in. When choosing your hotel, make sure you look for one that uses key cards to open the doors and that has deadbolt locks and peepholes on them. Also, make sure you keep a random schedule, so you don't leave and come back at the exact same time every day.

If you plan on taking taxi cabs during your trip, always sit where you can see the driver, but he can't see you - preferably right behind him. When paying the driver, make sure you do so while still inside the cab.

Conversely, if you plan on renting a car, only rent from a reliable company. If you experience any operating problems, keep in mind that it might be sabotage and do your research as needed. On that note, you should also watch out for street scams. A lot of children out there happen to work with adults as pickpockets.

Now, if you are traveling with other people, try not to talk about your travel plans or your hotel room where strangers can hear you. Don't flash any important documents, passports or money in public, either.

Of course, it would always be smart to have a first aid kit ready while traveling. Pack some bandages, mosquito repellant, iodine, sunscreen, dramamine, alcohol packets and pepto bismol in yours, and add a small flashlight while you're at it. Remember: it's always better to be safe than sorry.

The biggest key to traveling safely in any location, though, would be situational awareness. Distractions due to luggage, hotel personnel, children and strangers can put anybody at risk, so always know what's going on around you and take full control of every possible scenario.
