What to do in the event of a dental emergency abroad

Travelling abroad can be a great experience. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and have new experiences. When people decide to travel abroad there is a lot of preparation involved such as packing, getting the tickets, sorting your passport, booking a hotel, etc. A trip abroad is expected to be a great experience with no problems – especially dental problems – but it can happen. Do you know what to do if you are faced with a dental emergency while travelling? Continue reading to find out. It is really something to consider. You never know what can happen when you are miles away from home.

Dental Problems That May Occur while Travelling Abroad

When a dental emergency happens abroad it is usually caused by poor dental health and years of neglect. It is best to visit your dentist every year or so and make sure that your teeth are in good condition and to get gum treatments. Many dental problems can happen abroad such as

1. Losing a tooth
2. Losing a filling
3. Infection/pain caused by gingivitis
4. Chipped tooth
5. Losing a tooth cap
6. Needing a root canal

If any of these dental issues occur abroad there are quick fixes to get you through the trip and there are ways to get dental care abroad.

Quick Fixes for Dental Emergencies Abroad

If you lose a tooth while travelling abroad, first thing you should do is put the tooth in some milk. The milk will maintain the surface of the tooth. Then you will have to get to a dentist as soon as you can so that the tooth can be implanted. Once the tooth is put in place only time can tell if the tooth will take. If a cap falls off put it back on until you can get to a dentist. If it remains off it can cause pain and damage to the tooth. Many may not know this but if you lose a filling, sugar free gum can be a life saver. If you stick a piece of it where the filling was it can reduce the pain and give you time to get to a dentist.

Getting Dental Work Done While Travelling

Getting a dental procedure done can be quite scary. You are unsure of the quality of work and the cleanliness of the equipment. In some countries it is best to get back home immediately if a dental problem occurs. If you are in Europe and obtained an EHIC before you travelled there, you can get dental and health care. You may have to pay before the procedure is done but it will be worth it. Some countries have very good health and dental service. The best thing to do is be prepared and take care of your teeth.
