Why London Is the Best Destination City in Europe

From its humble origins as a Roman frontier town to its status as a world capital, London has a storied past. Unlike newer cities, London's charm comes from its rich contrasts. It's the home of a Queen and of a museum of horrors, the birthplace of modern theatre and the spiritual home of punk style. London's art scene is as lively as its nightclubs, making it a destination for everyone from the cultural literati to the celebrity glitterati. Cheap airfares and hotels with astonishingly low prices for their quality are hallmarks of London's visitor-friendly economy.
A European shopping trip wouldn't be complete without a trip to London's high street shops. The city's structure grew organically over time, so many of the districts within it began life as their own cities. Kensington, the centre of London's designer fashion scene, is one such district. The shops of Kensington offer everything from traditional elegance to cutting-edge contemporary fashion from designers such as Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood. The crown of London's many shopping jewels is Harrods, a department store with over a million square feet of retail space. It's been said that if Harrods doesn't sell it, it isn't for sale; given the store's 330 departments, that maxim may well be true.
After a day of shopping, enjoy London's rich array of night life. Traditional pubs offer a warm, convivial atmosphere that makes any visitor feel at home, while more exotic fare from nightclubs catering to every possible taste in music and style. If nightclubs and pubs don't appeal, take in a show in London's West End theatre district. Reserve tickets in advance of the trip, though; these shows sell out quickly. Before the show, enjoy dinner at one of London's excellent restaurants. Like all port cities, London's cosmopolitan past has led to a rich mix of cuisines. Visitors from anywhere in the world will find home cooking in London.
Shopping, dining and dancing are enough to make even the most tireless traveller glad to see a hotel, and London's hotels are some of the world's finest. Renowned for their solicitous service, London hotels feature every amenity to pamper guests. Massage, turn-down service, exercise facilities and spa services are on offer at the city's hotels, but the prices are far lower than visitors might expect. Low airfares and short flights from anywhere within continental Europe make London a more attractive destination than ever.
